IPL Treatment FAQ
Read through the frequently asked questions below to find out more about IPL.
What type of hair can IPL treat?
A - IPL can treat all hair types and hair depths. With the best and most advanced IPL system dark hair, lighter colored hair and even light gray, post menopausal hair is possible to treat.
Is IPL treatment safe?
A - Yes, it is very safe. Some people may experience mild reddening of the treatment area for a day or so after treatment, but other complications are rare. The Intense Pulsed Light system delivers energy to the skin very gently.
What happens during an IPL hair reduction treatment?
A - Hair reduction begins by trimming away the hair above the skin. Then, a cool gel is spread over the treatment area. The IPL hand piece is then applied to the skin and pulses of light a released from the hand piece and begin to disable unwanted hair. Then the gel is removed, effectively treated hair in the treated area falls out over the next two weeks.
Can IPL damage or burn the skin?
A - IPL, being more advanced than other systems, has a separate cooling system around the treatment head and also has an in-built cooling system. This provides effective and safe treatments.
What body areas can be treated?
A - Almost any area of the body can be treated and the most common areas we treat the legs, back, back of the neck, upper lip, chin, underarms, stomach, bikini line, face, just to name a few.
Tell me more about cooling?
A - The IPL system comes with built in cooling in the IPL hand piece which can be adjusted to suit the patients comfort. Unlike older laser machines which required a separate cooling hose, I-PULSE 300 IPL has a state of the art cooling system which reduces the heat felt by the customer.
What does the treatment feel like?
A - While you may feel a slight tingling or pinch (similar to the snap of a rubber band) from the IPL hand piece, most people tolerate the procedure very well. Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, you may choose to have a topical anesthetic applied to increase comfort during the procedure. Patients with thicker and darker hair may feel the tingling sensation more.
How long do the treatments take?
A - We can treat some areas within 15 minutes. Others, such as the back or legs, may require up to 90 minutes depending on the area covered. Our Registered Nurses can advise you of the approximate required time for treatment.
How do I know if IPL is right for me?
A - We offer a comprehensive consultation that takes you through the process of IPL and includes a patch test so you know what to expect. Every question you could possibly imagine is covered in our consultation, including the treatment process, an approximation of how many treatments you will need, advanced skin analysis, and detailed personalized quote. You are also given the opportunity to ask questions, view clinical photographs of similar treatments and our IPL machine.
Do I have to let the hair grow out prior to an IPL hair reduction treatment?
A - No, the area should be shaven clean and this would achieve the best hair removal and hair reduction results from the IPL. Prior to having IPL hair treatments you must avoid waxing, tweezing, and depilatories. During the course of treatments you will be able to shave the area site, so you can remain virtually hair free.
How many treatments will I need?
A - The number of IPL treatments required will vary from person to person and your individual requirements will be discussed with you at your initial consultation and following your first treatment.
How much of a change can I expect from my IPL treatments?
A - See the before and after pictures below for an idea of the sort of changes that are possible with IPL.
