In the market for a vintage half-frame that'll keep on ticking even after the bombs drop and wipe us all to Kingdom Come? The Olympus PEN S is something you should seriously consider. While this PEN S has seen better days cosmetically, it was built to last and still shoots quite well. This was my second unit, the one I brought with me to Beijing (see photos here). It has scuffs on the bezel of the focusing and aperture rings, and the film counter knob is long gone. But that doesn't diminish this camera's ability to take lovely shots. The lens is a 30mm f/2.8. Shutter speeds go from B to 1/250 sec. Scale focus is in feet, with two indents so you can focus by feel. Do note that the PEN S is a fully manual camera. It has no meter nor through-the-viewfinder focusing. You have to use a handheld lightmeter or Sunny 16 method to meter. And, you have to be good at estimating shooting distance. It's easier than it sounds, promise. As a half-frame camera, the PEN S shoots 72 shots per 36-exposure roll. The orientation is portrait, rather than the usual landscape, which makes this great for shooting people. It's also tiny, practically silent and discreet, making it a good choice for street photography. This camera was released in 1960, making it 52 years old. It's also the ancestor of today's popular Olympus PEN micro 4/3 digital cameras. Despite its age, it still beats with a lot of life. Take care of it and it'll keep ticking.
