Beowulf: A Verse Translation (Penguin Classics) by Anonymous and Michael Alexander
MASS MARKET PAPERBACK
Beowulf is the most important traditional epic in the Old English language and, I would argue, the most important piece of ancient literature to read in English. It preserves the rich oral traditions from which it arose in all of its glory and is more accessible in this regard than the Homeric epics (to which it would be most closely compared) because the languages are more closely related and thus the forms are easier to keep intact (though this is still by no means easy).
With its 1st edition published in 1960 intended for students of the U.P., The History of the Filipino People is still going strong as the de facto history of the Philippines, with its 8th edition. The author's perceived leftist bent brought about several revisions of the book through the years, including a deletion of 3 of its chapters at one time, which is a testament to how book censorship in the country played out. Its now-famous cover was done by Malang, by the way, which makes the book a classic in every sense of the word.
This book is under production at the moment. It is designed especially for those pinoys who intend to study or work in a foreign country in an occupation involving some mathematics. Both soft and hard copies are available.
